Picture it… West Allis Memorial Hospital, West Allis, WI… July 22, 1975. It was that day that I came into this world kicking and screaming. And so it began. I had a pretty typical childhood I suppose. I was always very shy, and pretty much kept to myself. I didn’t have many friends growing up, and being somewhat small, and awkward, I tended to get picked on a lot. It was this in part that lead me to a interest in technology. I used my first computer, a Timex Sinclar ZX81 when it came out in the early 1980s. I still remember being the hit of “Show And Tell” in class when I wrote a simple program in basic to write “HI” on the screen. I amazed everyone, including the teacher.
Flash forward to my teen years. Long before there was Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, and for a most part, the Internet in general, there were BBSs, and a front-runner to the Internet, Prodigy. It was where I came to terms with the fact that I was gay. I had always known there was something different about me, I didn’t really know for sure what it was, until I connected in the online world. I realized that there were others my age who shared those feelings, and I wasn’t wrong or sick. I’ve made connections with friends through there with people who I am proud to say are still my friends to this day. It was also there I met my first boyfriend. Being young, new to dating, and just not ready to settle down, that didn’t last very long.
